Math tutoring

Here's what I actually help with, grade by grade. If your student's topic isn't listed, ask me — if it's outside what I know well, I'll say so.

Grades 1–3

  • Counting, place value, number lines
  • Adding and subtracting with regrouping
  • Telling time, money, simple measurement
  • Starting multiplication
  • Word problems that aren't scary

Grades 4–5

  • Times tables until they're automatic
  • Long multiplication and division
  • Fractions: comparing, adding, simplifying
  • Decimals and rounding
  • Area, perimeter, basic geometry

Grades 6–8

  • Ratios, rates, and percents
  • Negative numbers and integer rules
  • Expressions, equations, one and two step solving
  • Graphing lines and slope
  • Intro to pre-algebra and word-problem setup

How a session works

  1. 1. We start with whatever is due or whatever went badly on the last test.
  2. 2. I work a problem with them, then they work the next one while I watch.
  3. 3. If a basic skill is missing, we stop and fix that instead of pushing ahead.
  4. 4. At the end I write down what to practice before next time.

Sessions usually run 45–60 minutes. Weekly tends to work better than cramming before a test.

What to bring

  • Their math notebook and current homework
  • The last quiz or test, even if it went badly — especially if it did
  • Pencil, eraser, and scrap paper
  • A calculator only if their teacher lets them use one

Rates: to be decided — ask me and we'll figure out something fair.
